A community within the city of San Diego, California, University City is located in the northwestern portion of the city in the same area as the University of California, San Diego, from which it gets its name. The community is also sometimes referred to locally as simply "UTC," which is synonymous with the University Towne Center shopping mall located here. The community is bordered to the north by Sorrento Valley and Sorrento Mesa, to the south by Clairemont, to the west by La Jolla and to the east by Miramar. It lies about 12 miles north of downtown San Diego.
Many of the University City residents are in some way connected with the university: professors, other university employees and students all populate the community. Rose Canyon lies in the middle of the community and divides it into northern and southern portions. Parts of it are protected in the Rose Canyon Open Space Preserve. To the south of the canyon is the older part of the city, comprising more single-family homes and older residents, while the newer parts lie north of the canyon, populated by younger residents and with more condos and apartment complexes.
The large UTC mall is one of the community's best known landmarks, and it also has within it some parks, police and fire stations and an elementary school. Scripps Memorial Hospital and the University of California, San Diego's Thornton Hospital both are within University City and are major employers for both residents here and in the surrounding communities.
The community has three elementary schools: Marie Curie, John D. Spreckels and Doyle elementaries, Standley Middle School and University City High School. There are also three libraries in the community for residents to enjoy books and other media. The University City Golf Course is a popular course in the area and is easy accessible. Parks in the community where residents can enjoy the warm, temperate Southern California weather include Standley Recreation Center and Park, Doyle Recreation Center and Park, La Jolla Colony Park and Rose Canyon Open Space Park.
