San Marcos is a northern suburb of San Diego, California, located about 35 miles directly north of the downtown area and about five miles inland from the Pacific shores. In 2010, the city was estimated to be home to a population of just under 85,000. It borders Carlsbad to the west, Escondido to the east, Encinitas to the south and Vista to the north. It makes up an area of about 24 square miles. The community is a progressive community and is home to several higher education institutions. Therefore many of the residents are either employed in education and its sectors or are students.
The largest employers in San Marcos include Hunter Industries, UPS, Wal-Mart, TriStaff, Costco, Oncore Manufacturing Services, Teamwork Athletic Apparel and Lusardi Construction, all of which employ at least 300 workers. Median annual household income in San Marcos was estimated by the San Diego Association of Governments to be around $63,500 in 2005.
Public schools in the community are part of the San Marcos Unified School District, which includes 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, a charter high school, an independent study high school and a continuing study high school. There school district serves more than 17,000 students from here as well as parts of Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido and other areas in the region. San Marcos is also home to the 30,000-enrollment Palomar Community College and California State University, San Marcos, which has about 9,000 students studying 44 undergraduate programs, 10 graduate programs and a doctorate in education. The community also houses the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, a physical and occupational therapy graduate-level school.
The community has a number of attractions and things to do, with its Old California Restaurant Row one of the most popular restaurant destinations in the northern part of San Diego County. The community has a number of stores, shopping centers, a factory outlet mall, and Lake San Marcos, home to several golf courses and a recreational center.
