An unincorporated community in Southern California, Bonita is located between Chula Vista, National City and San Diego in southern San Diego County. The city takes up a total land area of about five square miles, sitting at an elevation of just 118 feet above sea level. In Bonita is a five-mile portion of Sweetwater River, which is bordered to the north by the Sweetwater Reservoir. Many of the homes located in Bonita are situated in housing editions built in the latter part of the 20th century.
Bonita, which means "beautiful" in Spanish, was named after a ranch owned by Henry Ernest Cooper in the late 1800s. The Sweetwater Reservoir was formed by the Sweetwater Dam near the turn of the 20th century, but the area still sometimes experiences minor flooding. At the 2000 census, there were about 12,500 residents in Bonita, with a large Hispanic population, estimated to be about 30%. In 2007, an estimate measured the annual household income in Bonita to be just over $92,000.
Residents of Bonita will find their children served by the Chula Vista Elementary School District, including three schools in the area, and the Sweetwater Union High School District, which oversees a junior high and high school, both located in Chula Vista. There is also a two-year community college in Chula Vista, Southwestern College.
One of the most popular attractions in Bonita is a walking trail that circles the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course in the central part of the community. On any given day, a number of residents can be found running, walking, or biking along the path. Bonita's year-round warm climate gives residents opportunities to enjoy the path nearly all year long. There are also a few other parks to enjoy, including Sweetwater County Park, Sweetwater Regional Park, the Bonita Golf Course and Fred H. Rohr Park. Every year the community holds Bonitafest in the fall, complete with a parade, street fair golf tournament and other festivities. The Bonita Historical Museum offers a chance to learn about the history of the community.
