A community within the Southern California metropolis of San Diego, the Talmadge neighborhood is located about seven miles northeast of the downtown area, just east of Highway 15. The neighborhood is bordered by Fairmount Avenue to the west, Montezuma Road and Collwood Boulevard to the northeast and El Cajon Boulevard to the south. It is also just south of Interstate 8, offering a quick route for easy access into downtown San Diego and across other parts of the metropolitan area.

Talmadge was named after Norma, Natalie and Constance Talmadge, three sisters who were silent-film movie stars in the 1920s who opened the Talmadge Park real estate development in 1927. The community is home to the Promise Hospital of San Diego and has its own Colina Del Sol Park. Talmadge and nearby Kensington are sometimes grouped together as one neighborhood for planning purposes.

Children living in Talmadge are assigned to schools in the San Diego Unified School District. The only school physically within Talmadge is the Herbert Hoover High School. Children attend elementary and middle schools in other communities within San Diego. Talmadge is situated just south of Qualcomm Stadium, home to San Diego's NFL team, the Chargers, as well as to National University, an Ikea home furnishings store, the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, and San Diego State University.
