North County Inland  Information & Highlights

The area of the San Diego region referred to as "North County Inland" is a reference to the several communities that lie north of the downtown area of San Diego but five or more miles inland from Southern California's coast. Most of the communities are smaller or mid-sized, though there are a few larger, stand-alone cities as well. Generally, the area refers to communities like Mira Mesa, Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, Poway, Ramon, Mira Mesa and Carmel Mountain Ranch, in addition to several others.

Colleges and higher education institutions in or near the region include the University of San Diego, the San Diego Mesa College, the University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University and Point Loma Nazarene University as well as Alliant International University in Mira Mesa, Palomar Community College in Poway, a California State University campus and the University of St. Augustine for Health Science in San Marcos, Biola University and Kaplan College in Vista and the John Paul the Great Catholic University in Scripps Ranch. Public grade-school level schools are overseen by a variety of different school districts, some local and some affiliated with the greater city of San Diego. There are also a number of private schools, both big and small and religious and secular, scattered throughout the area.

The primary hospitals in the area are Aurora Hospital San Diego and Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation  in Carmel Mountain and Pomerado Hospital in Rancho Bernardo. The economies of the region's communities are varied, but several industries are major employers across the board, including construction, education, technology, restaurant/services and retail.

There are plenty of parks, lakes, mountains and canyons in the area, including Miramar Lake and Dixon Lake, Lake Wohlford and Lake Hodges in Escondido. The ocean is also just a short drive west. Escondido is home to a Buddhist monastery, and Vista is home to one of only two Buddhist temples in the state of California. There are countless high-caliber golf courses from which to choose, and the sunny, temperate climate means golfers can play virtually year-round here. Escondido houses the the Mingei International Museum and the  Escondido Children's Museum, while the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum can be found in Vista.
