Many of the street names in the community, like the name of Kensington itself, are named after locations in England. It's also just south of National University, an Ikea home furnishings store, the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, and San Diego State University.

The only school physically located in the community is Franklin Elementary School. Hoover Senior High School, though not technically within the community, is just minutes away. Children attend middle and high schools elsewhere in San Diego. Kensington's closest park is the Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park on the western side of Highway 15.

The community's location also puts residents just minutes from all that San Diego has to offer -- from some of the world's most beautiful beaches to world-class education centers and hospitals to a variety of businesses and industries and top-notch research institutions. There are several military bases and posts in the area as well, and the area has a strong base of military members.
