Located about 25 miles north of San Diego and about 95 miles south of Los Angeles, Encinitas, California, is a large suburban coastal community located right along the Pacific shores. At the 2000 census it was measured to be home to a population of around 60,000 with a median household income of about $65,000. That figure was measured in 2005 by the San Diego Association of Governments to have risen to more than $86,500.
The community is generally divided up into five distinct areas: Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Olivehain, Leucadi and Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The city's area is more than 20 square miles, only 5% of that water. The largest industry in the city is growing and cultivation of ornamental flowers, with a particular emphasis on poinsettias.
Attractions in Encinitas include the Lux Art Institute and the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, as well as the San Diego Botanic Garden, the Self-Realization Fellowship temple and hermitage, the La Paloma Theater and Moonlight Beach. Annual events here include the fall festival in November, the Wavecrest Woodie Meet, with wooden-bodied vehicle owners, and an annual Oktoberfest in September based on the similar festivals in Germany.
Public grade schools in Encinitas are overseen by three school districts: the San Dieguito Union High School District, the Cardiff School District and the Encinitas Union School District. There are two visual arts schools, several private and charter high schools, like San Dieguito Academy, Grauer School and Pacific Academy, and private middle schools like Encinitas Country Day School and the Rhoades School. There are also many private elementary schools. Mira Costa College's San Elijo campus is in Encinitas and provides a community college base.
