In 1986, the first neighborhoods of the master-planned East Lake community were opened on 3,200 acres of land just south of San Diego within the city of Chula Vista. Today the neighborhood continues to flourish, and it is one of the most popular community in the South County, with some of highest real estate prices. The area is very close to Chula Vista's Olympic Training Center for U.S. athletes and thus many American Olympians call the neighborhood home. Its neighborhoods now include East Lake Hills, East Lake Shores, East Lake Greens, East Lake Trails, East Lake Vistas, The Woods and East Lake Trails North. Most homes range from $300,000 on up to the millions. The community is estimated to have a capacity of holding around 28,000 residents.
East Lake grants its residents easy access to a number of recreational opportunities and amenities. There are: Dolphin Beach, which includes a swimming lagoon, beach volleyball arena and tanning beaches; Creekside Park and Clubhouse, with an outdoor entertaining area, two pools, a 2-acre lake surrounded by walking trails; the 13-acre Chula Vista Community Park, with two lit ball fields, two lit soccer fields, a playground and picnicking grounds; the South Bay Family YMCA Sutherland Gymnastics and Family Sports Complex; East Lake Little League Fields; Creekside Park, which offers a 5,000-square foot swimming pool along with a spa, children's pool and barbecue facilities; and East Lake Country Club, the 18-hole 6,000-plus-yard course, opened in 1991. The community has more than 1,100 acres of parks and open space currently in use or planned. The entire community is linked with bicycle and jogging paths.
The are six public schools operating in East Lake: East Lake Elementary, Olympic View Elementary, Arroyo Vista Elementary, Salt Creek Elementary, East Lake Middle, and East Lake High School. The high school has a well developed performing arts center on its campus, and the two-year Southwestern College is just a few miles away in Chula Vista proper.
The community hosts a multitude of annual events like a holiday tree lighting, fun run/walk events, a cycling race, East Lake Summer Sounds concerts in the park and the South Bay Summer Game, a mini-Olympics. Because of its close proximity to the Olympics Training Center, there are many sporting events and competitions held in partnership with Olympic athletes. The community also has commercial areas, including East Lake Village Marketplace, an upscale shopping area with specialty stores as well as common retail chains like Target, and the East Lake Village Center, with an anchor grocery stores and a number of other stores and restaurants. Hitachi, Leviton and DNP have their North American headquarters at the East Lake Business Center, and the community hosts a weekly farmers market and open-air bazaar.
