A newspaper tycoon, E.W. Scripps was the founder of Scripps Ranch. Traveling out of San Diego, which didn’t leave a favorable impression on him, he fell in love with the area which is eponymously named after his family today. He was fascinated by the balanced combination of “mountain background” and “sea foreground”, and he was particularly fond of the climate which relieved him of allergic rhinitis that had followed him like a shadow through life.
How Scripps Ranch became verdant
The lush greenery of Scripps Ranch is one of its most arresting features. To be precise, Scripps Ranch is rich in fragrant eucalyptus trees. It is believed that Scripps’ gardener, Jerabek, started this by planting the first eucalyptus trees intended for railroad ties. However, the trees were saved from this use on account of being too brittle. The eucalyptus tree is actually one of the fastest growing trees and propagates through a variety of ways. Unfortunately, the impressive eucalyptus population in this city took a significant blow in Cedar Fire in 2003.
How Scripps Ranch Real Estate Became Family-Oriented
With all the modern facilities and amenities today, it may be difficult to imagine Scripps Ranch at the end of 19th century. The founder’s wife fiercely opposed to the family moving from their Illinois home to Miramar Ranch. The ranch was 35 minutes away from the nearest railway station and it took the same amount of time to get to town (and all its facilities like hospitals, restaurants, the theater, etc.). Los Angeles was two hours of “hard driving” away. On top of this remoteness, the area was generously inhabited by rattlesnakes.
However, nothing stood in the way of making E.W. Scripps’ dream come true. The ranch genuinely was a dream, an experiment in utopian family living. The ranch gathered Scripps family members in a communal living arrangement that aimed to provide them privacy and companionship in addition to a source of income. House rules forbade debts and speculations, pointed out that the home was to be agreeable and all investment income was to come from agriculture only.
The Scripps family had a prominent role in shaping San Diego from the beginning of 20th century until the 1940’s and beyond. They developed and maintained civic institutions promoting health, social welfare, intellectual and cultural activity and exchange.
The 1980’s boom: Scripps Ranch real estate reaches top of wish lists
In the 1960’s the ranch was abandoned and sold to developers due to high costs of living and maintenance. Throughout this decade tours were organized. Even in the 1970’s the city was a few dozen homes on the periphery of San Diego. By 1980, that number soared dramatically, surpassing 1,600 homes. For the next ten years, the number increased by the hundreds, reaching more than 7,000 homes at the start of 21st century. As we said at the beginning, today Scripps Ranch has more than 32,000 residents.
