Mission Valley Information & Highlights

Mission Valley is a community in the city of San Diego in Southern California. It's named after the Mission river valley through which San Diego River travels to the ocean, and it is divided into two distinct neighborhoods, Mission Valley East and Mission Valley West. It was the first Spanish settlement site in California when it was settled in 1769.

 The community lies situated between Interstates 8 and 15, about six miles northwest of downtown San Diego. It's just north of the San Diego International Airport, which offers dozens of domestic and international flights. The San Diego Trolley system's green line runs through Mission Valley, and it has two a major point for catching local buses throughout the area at the Fashion Valley Transit Center and Mall.

The old  Mission San Diego de Alcala lies in Mission Valley. It was founded in 1769 by Junipero Serra, a Spanish friar, and was the first Franciscan mission in the area. Other attractions include Presidio Park,  Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and Mission Bay Park, which is the largest man-made water park in the country at more than 4,000 acres and includes San Diego Sea World, with 27 miles of shoreline. There are also three major shopping malls: Fashion Valley Mall, Westfield Mission Valley and Hazard Center Mall.

Qualcomm Stadium, the home of the local NFL team, the San Diego Chargers, is located in Mission Valley near the interstate exchange. The Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego is just south of the community, and there are therefore many military families living in the neighborhood. The community also lies right near the state's Pacific shores, giving it close proximity to some of the area's finest beaches.
